Irritable Bowel Syndrome

November 2000
By Dr Peter Berkin
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, IBS, is a common, very uncomfortable condition, which is mainly caused by stress and worry. The main symptoms are abdominal pains, bloating, alternating diarrhoea and constipation, excessive flatulence, lethargy and general malaise. Having excluded more serious problems that may cause similar symptoms your Doctor is likely to prescribe antispasmodics such as mebeverine and fibre substitutes. Unfortunately these medicines are not often very effective.

Diet and Exercise

Regular exercise will help to dissipate the stress that causes the problem. A healthy diet containing more natural fibre from oats, dried beans, peas, fresh fruit and vegetables will help. Wheat bran can however make the condition worse in some people.

Natural Remedies to Consider

Peppermint has long been recognised as a good herbal remedy for IBS. It can be taken as a capsule preparation or as a tea, combined to good effect with camomile and fennel.

Complementary Therapies

Hypnotherapy may help by promoting a more relaxed state and helping you to cope with stress. Acupuncture can be beneficial in both relieving pain and helping you to relax. Aromatherapy, especially if essential oil of peppermint is used, can be a very effective way to relax and reduce the painful bowel spasms of IBS. Reflexology can also be used very effectively to achieve a general state of relaxation and to ease pains It is also well worth considering a consultation with a Nutritionist to make a more detailed analysis of your diet and to consider having stool tests performed Homeopathy can be used to treat IBS perhaps in combination with herbal remedies. Shiatsu may help through its overall calming effect and restoration of balance.
