How You Can Access Your Inner Wisdom
Client “P” came for hypnotherapy a few years ago at the day care hospice in Corby where I practice one day per week. In his seventies and in spite of cancer, he looked fit, alert, much more of a sixty something. In our first session, as we got to know each other, P told me about his life in India as a child. His father used to take him in the car to see a hermit who lived way out in the wilds. P’s father loved to listen to this reclusive man for hours, soaking up his wisdom.
The tale had a truly gruesome ending, but it hadn’t directly affected my client, and we moved on to some introductory relaxation work. Near the end of our meeting P declared that he was, “Looking for an exit strategy.” I pricked my ears up at this and made a mental note to investigate this statement when we had more time.
During the second session P told me about a terrifying experience in fierce, mountainous, seas near Iceland. We pursued some hypnosis techniques on symptoms that P had specified. Once more near the end of the session he mentioned, almost as an aside, that he was looking for an exit strategy.
Starting the third session I was ready, but he beat me to it. He said that since he had been attending our meetings and from the hypnotic processes we had shared, he now knew that he didn’t need an exit strategy! Delighted for him, but slightly miffed at not being able to investigate this intriguing topic, I decided to leave well alone.
P attended one more session, and then missed the next as he was unwell – within four weeks he had passed away...
So, what WAS that all about? Although so little mentioned, had P’s need for an “exit strategy” been his most pressing concern all along? How was it that the resolution had happened without being directly addressed?
I believe that in this case the answer had occurred through the state, and not by direct intervention. The opportunity for relaxation, and the chance to enter an altered state of consciousness (hypnosis), had provided the opportunity to “go inside”. Then P’s inner wisdom could do the rest!
A young woman came to see me with a much lighter everyday concern to do with work and personal life. Having listened to all the details, a solution seemed obvious. I felt that if I’d had half of Milton Keynes in the room with me, we would have all suggested the same resolution. However, I knew that the best outcome would be for my client to allow her inner wisdom to present the ideal option from within. I introduced her to the relaxed state, and off she went.
At the start of the next session she told me that the solution woke her up the night after our first meeting! (Yes, it was the same solution that had occurred to me.) The following day she was a little uneasy about what those involved would think as she proposed the changes she desired. To her surprise, and delight, everyone was most accommodating and all was happily resolved.
Once again, an opportunity had been provided for the inner wisdom to be “awoken”, and in its own time it had delivered the goods.
When I work with clients at Alternatives, we have a specific end in view. Weight loss, giving up smoking and boosting self esteem are just a few of the concerns addressed, and there are specific ways to bring about change.
Nevertheless, I find it fascinating how simply taking the time to deeply relax, using hypnosis, can bring unexpected life changes – and it’s quite painless!
What a wonderful way to access your inner wisdom.
